New research to rethink publishing and sharing in academia
How can we create an alternative to the traditional, profit-driven models of academic publishing? This question lies at the heart of the SHAPE project Knowledge Servers, which, with a grant from Open Book Futures (OBF), will publish an experimental publication to explore new ways of disseminating research.
The project is part of the new digital platform, Servpub – A Collective Infrastructure to Serve and Publish, which aims to transform the way we publish and share knowledge. Developed by OBF in collaboration with artists, researchers, and technology providers, Servpub challenges traditional publishing models by offering a community-driven, self-directed alternative.
Rather than relying on large commercial publishers, Servpub fosters an environment where authors and artists can publish freely without the constraints of profit-driven solutions.
With a grant from OBF's Experimental Publishing Group, PI Christian Ulrik Andersen, Co-PI Pablo Velasco, and Postdoc Nicolas Maleve will publish an experimental publication through the Knowledge Servers project, exploring new approaches to academic publishing with a focus on open access, workflows, and technical infrastructure.
About Servpub
The Servpub platform integrates the entire publishing process – from writing and editing to distribution and hosting – in one place. Here, authors can create and share experimental books using open-source technology and self-hosted server infrastructure.
Servpub aims to create new forms of knowledge sharing where everyone involved in the process has full control, while emphasizing critical reflection on the power dynamics and working conditions in the publishing industry.
Partners include University College London's Slade School of Fine Art, Aarhus University's SHAPE project, and feminist technology collectives such as In-grid and Syster Server. Together, they are working to create a global community that not only publishes books but also rethinks what a book can be and how knowledge can best be shared in the 21st century.
