Magnus Høholt Kaspersen joins SHAPE as a Postdoc in Digital Literacy and Machine Learning

Magnus' project aims to develop specific, hands-on courses in digital technology targeting artificial intelligence and machine learning for Danish citizens, supporting active citizenship, creativity, and empowerment in an increasingly digital society.

Magnus has recently completed his PhD project at Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University. In his studies, Magnus has conducted a thorough design inquiry into artificial intelligence in the classroom of secondary schools. He studied how to empower students to approach AI critically and to scaffold the understanding necessary to do so. The work centered on six prototypes of learning tools and activities that have been deployed across several classrooms.

In SHAPE, Magnus will continue his research into AI, machine learning, and empowerment, focusing now on citizenship rather than education. Magnus will be working together with Peter Dalsgaard and Ole Sejer Iversen in the SHAPE project 'Digital Literacy and Machine Learning' which also collaborates with Karl-Emil Kjær Bilstrup, postoc at Department of Computer Science, and Marianne Graves Petersen, professor at Department of Computer Science.

With him, Magnus has brought ml-machine.org, a platform for hands-on learning with machine learning that enables its users to go behind the curtain and experience its building blocks. He is collaborating with Dokk1, the main public library in Aarhus, and DM, the union for Danish academic workers, on creating courses and activities for citizens that can help support their digital literacy regarding machine learning. Thus, his project aims to empower citizens when they engage with AI technologies by supporting their understanding of how these work, and what their potentials and challenges are.

The first event will be held on February 22 2023 in collaboration with Dokk1 - read more here
