Meet a SHAPE researcher: Antonia Clasina Södergren

Antonia Clasina Södergren is a postdoc in SHAPE, and is working on the project "Still learning? AI in educational settings - exploring a must-have or nice-to-have learning future"

[Translate to English:]

What is your professional background and primary area of research?
"I have a PhD in Design for Play with a focus on child-centred, participatory design and interaction design processes. My background is quite broad – I have worked as a business consultant, taught at BA and MA level in design, and taught at Danish youth colleges in subjects such as German, theatre, art, design and project management.

I have also worked closely with both business leaders and research institutions, which has given me experience in building bridges between the creative and strategic worlds.

My primary area of research is how we can implement socio-ethical and value-based principles in human-centered design. I work primarily with playful and participatory methods that allow for self-expression, knowledge development, and creative meaning-making.
It is precisely this combination of ethical design, participatory methods, and pedagogical understanding that has led me to my current work with AIShapeScape—a project that explores how AI can be integrated into teaching in a meaningful and ethical way."

What is your current research project at SHAPE about?
"My current research project at SHAPE, “Still learning? AI in educational settings,” is about how we can integrate artificial intelligence into teaching in an ethical, pedagogical, and meaningful way. As part of the project, I have developed AIShapeScape – a participant-driven planning tool, created together with teacher educators and teacher students.

The tool helps them make informed decisions about AI use, strengthens their courage to experiment, and promotes deep learning rather than superficial use of technology. The project is rooted in design-based research and co-design workshops, where participants' own experiences and values shape the solution. In this way, AIShapeScape functions both as a concrete learning tool and as an example of how we can build “AI literacy” in teacher education so that future teachers can navigate safely in a rapidly evolving digital world."

What future projects do you have in the pipeline?
"I want to continue creating and facilitating discussions about ethics that are not merely theoretical, but are translated into concrete practices that enhance quality and strengthen the values we work from. For me, it is about supporting knowledge sharing and learning across generations, and about improving both research and practice through design research.

At the same time, I want to work to ensure that technological development, curiosity, ethical reflection, and pedagogical clarity become central elements in how we prepare the teachers of the future. If “knowledge is power,” teachers must not only have access to it - they must also be equipped to own it, interpret it, and pass it on with integrity."
