New model aims to strengthen students' critical understanding of AI in primary schools
SHAPE researchers Ole Sejer Iversen and Mikkel Hjorth introduce “Tekspejlet” – a new tool for exploring and discussing generative AI in education.

How can we talk to students about artificial intelligence in a way that is both academically grounded and democratically engaging? This question is explored by SHAPE researcher Ole Sejer Iversen and assistant professor Mikkel Hjorth in a chapter of the new book AI i Skolen (AI in Schools), where they introduce "Tekspejlet" (The Text Mirror) – an initial model for analyzing and discussing digital technologies in primary education.
“Tekspejlet” is an analytical and didactic tool that invites students and teachers to collaboratively examine technologies – such as apps, platforms, and AI models – through six different lenses:
- Economy
- Culture
- Utility
- Equality
- Education
- Democracy
The model is based on the idea that technologies act as mirrors: what we see depends on the perspective we adopt and how well we understand the technology. According to the authors, Tekspejlet is not a checklist of answers, but a starting point for meaningful conversations about technology and democracy in schools.
The book is aimed at teachers, school leaders, and others interested in digital education and technological literacy in the classroom.
