Postdoc Nicolas René M Maleve joins SHAPE

As of October 2024, Nicolas René M Maleve has joined the project on “Knowledge Servers” together with PI Christian Ulrik Andersen and Pablo Velasco.

Nicolas is a Postdoc at the institute of Communication and Culture, department of Aesthetics and Culture. His research interests focus on the techno-cultural dynamics of digital images and image-based datasets and their applications in AI technologies.

Nicolas’ PhD (2021) titled: Algorithms of Vision, was a collaboration between The Photographers gallery and CSNI in LSBU, and he has published research on the relation between photography and AI. As a member of the collective Active Archives, he has developed digital tools to navigate visual archives and explore data structures.

The shift toward digitization and dependence on knowledge generated by e.g., Big Tech corporations’ AI services, as well as repositories of knowledge in popular culture and academia, raises concerns. When knowledge is delivered as a service, it comes with the risk of obscuring the conditions of knowledge production. In joining SHAPE’s project on Knowledge Servers, Nicolas will investigate questions that point at the material, political, and organizational aspects of knowledge production, together with Christian Ulrik Andersen and Pablo Velasco.

Welcome, Nicolas!
