SHAPE researcher Renée Ridgway presented NGI search at OW2Con 2024

At the Open Source Community Annual Conference 2024 (OW2Con), Renée gave a talk on "Ethics and Values in FOSS” and also moderated a session on Next Generation Internet success stories.

In an era where digital technologies play an increasingly significant role in our lives, it is more important than ever to ensure that tools like internet search engines and AI systems are developed ethically. During the two-day OW2con’24, Renée presented her research on the future of internet search and the ethical development of open source search projects.

On Day 1, Renée’s talk “Ethics and values in FOSS: sustainability of open-source development " highlighted the critical intersection of ethics and open-source technology. Her insights emphasized the sustainability of open-source development and showcased the EU’s vision for the Next Generation Internet (NGI) search project, which aims to transform the internet search and discovery experience.

On Day 2, Renée moderated a session featuring three NGI success stories, where the NGI Search funding recipients presented their projects. These included advancements in detecting fake news about health, a 3D art gallery for global artists, and an AI-powered knowledge graph for visualizing disinformation networks. The projects sparked discussions on AI and its use of data sources and the role of open-source technologies in addressing societal challenges.

Renée’s contributions, along with the showcased projects, underscored the significance of ethical and sustainable open-source initiatives that are shaping the future of technology and information accessibility.
