SHAPE is happy to announce that Reader Arne Hintz (Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Culture and co-Director of its Data Justice Lab) will give a talk on Digital Citizenship in a Datafied Society: Challenges and Opportunities for a Datafied Democracy at our third Sociotechnical Data Studies Saloon.

Bio

Dr Arne Hintz is Reader (Associate Professor) at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Culture and co-Director of its Data Justice Lab. His research focuses on the practices and conditions of digital citizenship, combining work on participation, digital policy, internet governance, and datafication. His recent books include the co-authored ‘Digital Citizenship in the Datafied Society’ (Polity, 2019) and ‘Data Justice’ (Sage, 2022).

Digital Citizenship in a Datafied Society: Challenges and Opportunities for a Datafied Democracy

The roll-out of data systems, automated decision-making and AI in the public sector has changed state-citizen relations and has provided challenges for both digital citizenship and democracy. As increasingly datafied citizens, we are assessed, profiled, categorised and scored according to data assemblages, and our role in society is assigned accordingly, yet we have little knowledge about the workings, purposes and implications of datafication and few possibilities to challenge it. What, then, does active citizenship mean in a datafied society? How do we participate in, and intervene into, the deployment of data systems? How do we advance democratic forms of data governance? Drawing from recent work by the Data Justice Lab, this talk will explore different avenues for citizens to engage with the current deployment of data systems and investigate the role of citizens in decision-making about data.
